This month we are highlighting our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee. The EDI Committee was formed to address iniquities in our profession at a local scale.
Though somewhat recently formed, this growing committee is comprised of ambitious members motivated to move beyond discussion and to effect action items for change.
The committee currently meets virtually bimonthly, but meetings may become more frequent as needed. Current plans focus on producing an autumn 2023 roundtable webinar for high school guidance counselors to help them identify and encourage potential architecture students in their schools to pursue the profession. Additional endeavors in the planning stages include a pilot program to mentor and support disadvantaged students from grade/middle school through registration at an individual or collective firm level and a campaign to engage disadvantaged, nontraditional, and other students via social media to help them to see themselves as a part of the future of the profession.
The committee welcomes new members. Members do not have to be AIA members – all interested parties are welcome to participate. Follow AIA Rochester on social media or visit our events listing to learn of upcoming committee meetings. Please contact Michelle Murnane, AIA at mmurnane@aiaroc.org for more information and to be placed on a committee email distribution list.
